Not at all! Most of our students start with no martial arts background. BJJ is all about learning and progressing at your own pace.
Absolutely not! You don’t need to be in shape to begin. BJJ is a fantastic way to improve your fitness, flexibility, and endurance while learning a valuable skill.
Safety is our priority. Our classes are led by experienced instructors who ensure all techniques are taught in a controlled and respectful environment. You’ll learn at your own pace and if you have any lingering injuries we can work around it.
Just wear comfortable athletic clothing (like a T-shirt and shorts). If you don’t have a gi (uniform), we’ll provide one for you to use during your trial classes. You can wear sandals or slip on shoes and bring a water bottle. We do have a shower available if needed, so bring your own toiletries if you plan to use our shower facilities.
Your first class will be fun and low-pressure! You’ll warm up with the group, be introduced to and drill basic techniques, and watch the grappling rounds we end each class with. If you’re comfortable, you can try an introductory grappling round with a teacher. We offer a supportive environment, and you will always have our help and encouragement.
BJJ focuses on technique and leverage, making it unique and highly effective for real-world self-defense. It’s also non-striking, which minimizes the risk of injuries.
Yes! BJJ teaches practical techniques to control and neutralize opponents, making it one of the most effective self-defense systems, especially for smaller people against larger attackers, and fights that go to the ground.

Absolutely! BJJ combines body weight strength activity and cardio, making it a great way to lose weight, tone muscle and maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is also a FUN way to work out for those of us who find a standard gym work out boring! Most BJJ classes are 1 hour, and 15-30 minutes and you can easily burn 800-1,000 calories per class. If you want to get in shape there is no faster way than with BJJ.
During training, your brain releases endorphins and dopamine, the "feel-good" chemicals that improve your mood and reduce stress. Many people compare the sensation to a "runner's high."
The challenging yet rewarding nature of BJJ also creates a sense of accomplishment, self-confidence, positivity and community. These effects carry on long after training, leaving you feeling happier, more focused, and better equipped to handle the rest of your day.
Absolutely! It is our opinion that EVERY female should train BJJ. BJJ empowers women by building confidence, strength, and real self-defense skills that are effective against larger opponents. We offer women’s-only classes to provide a comfortable training environment for women who prefer to train with other females.
